O’Shea Place: 33 New Affordable Homes and Childcare Spaces Coming to Gibsons
Construction is underway on O’Shea Place, the second phase of the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society’s (SCAHS) development in upper Gibsons. Scheduled for completion in early 2026, the project will deliver 33 new affordable rental homes and 43 licensed childcare spaces for local families.
Building on the success of Shaw Place, which opened in 2024 with 40 homes for families, seniors, and individuals, O’Shea Place marks another important step toward addressing the Sunshine Coast’s housing and childcare needs.
“O’Shea Place will create much-needed housing for our local workforce, families, and seniors — so they can continue to live, work, and retire here on the Coast,” said SCAHS President Kim Darwin. “With the addition of an affordable daycare on site, this project will support the people who keep our community strong.”
The Government of Canada has contributed $9.6 million through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to support construction of the four-storey development. The announcement was made on August 13 by MP Patrick Weiler (West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea to Sky Country) on behalf of the federal housing minister.
O’Shea Place will feature a mix of bachelor, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, including seven fully accessible homes and barrier-free common areas. The on-site childcare centre, supported by nearly $2.9 million from ChildCareBC’s New Spaces Fund, will include 25 spaces for children aged 30 months to school age, and 18 spaces for before- and after-school care.
Once completed, the Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society will own and operate both Shaw Place and O’Shea Place, providing a total of 73 affordable homes and essential childcare services for the community.
