What We Do

The Sunshine Coast Affordable Housing Society (SCAHS) is dedicated to creating housing solutions that strengthen our entire community. We build and operate affordable rental housing, develop childcare facilities, and deliver innovative housing programs that respond to local needs.

Our work is guided by two strategic areas:

Housing Development and Acquisition

SCAHS is recognized as a leader in the planning and development of affordable rental housing on the Sunshine Coast. Our success is built on strong partnerships with all levels of government, funders, landowners, builders, and community stakeholders, as well as expertise in pre-development, construction, and financial models.

  • Current Housing: We operate 43 affordable rental homes in Gibsons, BC, including both small-scale projects and a large mixed-use apartment building.

  • In Progress: A 33-unit rental building with an on-site childcare centre is under construction, scheduled for completion in summer 2026.

  • Upcoming Projects: In partnership with the District of Sechelt, we are advancing a 23-unit rental apartment with integrated childcare facilities.

Housing Soultions and Programs

We know that building housing is only part of the solution. Sustainable change requires programs that support residents, create pathways out of homelessness, and encourage community-led housing initiatives.

Through Cover the Coast—a regional collaboration that brings together housing stakeholders via a Housing Action Table—we coordinate several initiatives, including:

  • Harbour Lights Low-Income Seniors Housing Initiative

  • The Kitchen Table Collective, supporting seniors aging in place

  • Citizen Developer Program, offering guidance on conversions and retrofits

  • Essential Service Workers Rental Registry

  • Land Use Study, an inventory and assessment of land that could be used for affordable housing

  • The Situation Table, supporting individuals at high risk through multi-sector collaboration and intervention
